The reviews posted on this site may seem a little different to those accustomed to the “mainstream” gaming press fare. A list of the few rules and guidelines for the reviews published here might make it more clear to readers what they are and what they attempt to accomplish.
No Scores. No A-F, no 1-10, no 1-3 stars; games are not ranked or rated by any scale. The reviews are more along the lines of critical essays about the games in question.
No Partial Play Through. Every game reviewed here has been completed start to finish. While not every minor side quest or element of the game may have been explored in the review, they will have at least been attempted or understood.
Exposition and Critical. Exposition is as an expository essay; often most game reviews are exposition with small amounts of opinion sprinkled throughout. This is not how it will be done here. Reviews on this site will each have “exposition” and “critical” sections. The exposition section will be almost entirely expository and little or no opinion. Critical does not mean negative! It means to be thoughtful and engage the game from an objective point of view to make a specific argument regarding the game. These two categories will be the two parts of all reviews posted here. If you want just a description of what the game is like, read the expository portion, if you want to know what I thought of the game, read the critical portion.
Using these three axioms I will endeavor to publish the best reviews I can write. I will also periodically go back and edit old reviews to make them better or to add thoughts that did not exist at the time of their writing. Also because of these rules I will not be reviewing games in the most timely manner; the games I review will likely been out for quite some time and are not meant to be some kind of “buyer’s guide” or advertisement for the game itself. More like a starting point or addition to a discourse about the games and video games as an entity themselves.
